Doing IT field work in France: what to know
France is a large, spread-out market, and the gap between Paris and the regions shapes how field work runs. These points help foreign teams plan.
Language and time zone
French is the language of the workplace. Site contacts, security staff and access procedures will usually be in French, and customers often expect engineer reports in French as well. Ask for a French-speaking engineer on customer-facing jobs. France is on Central European Time, one hour ahead of the UK.
Working days often include a longer lunch break, and some smaller sites close for an hour or more in the middle of the day. Plan arrival times so engineers are not left waiting at a locked door. In August, many businesses run with reduced staff, so book planned rollouts and site surveys around the summer break and confirm who will be on site to sign off the work.
Public holidays and bridge days
France has eleven legal public holidays, listed on the official Service-Public.fr holiday page. Alsace and Moselle add Good Friday in some communes and 26 December. When a holiday falls on a Thursday or Tuesday, many businesses also close the day in between (a pont), so a site may be shut for four days. Check site calendars in May, which often has several holidays, before promising next-business-day cover.
Data protection
France applies the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) together with the French Data Protection Act (Loi Informatique et Libertés). The regulator is the CNIL. On site, the questions are practical: who keeps a failed disk, whether photos of racks are allowed, and how personal data on returned laptops is treated. Put the answers in the job instructions before dispatch, and ask for them to be confirmed in the close-out report.
Data centre access
Colocation sites around Paris and Marseille usually need advance registration, ID on arrival and booked slots. Some ask for a prevention plan or method statement before work on live equipment. Allow time for this at onboarding so the first urgent visit is not held up at reception.
Parts and logistics
Parts from Great Britain now cross a customs border into France, with declarations required, as set out in GOV.UK guidance on exporting goods from the UK. For a large country, distance matters too: a part that reaches Paris overnight can take longer to reach Marseille or Toulouse. Holding spares regionally inside France or the EU shortens fix times for sites outside Paris.
How it works
The model plugs into your existing ticketing and service desk:
- Scope: you share your sites in France, the equipment and the service level you need.
- Coverage plan: we confirm which locations we cover and propose the right service tier for each.
- Onboarding: we join your vendor panel and agree the process for raising and closing jobs.
- Dispatch: you log a job; we send a vetted engineer to site.
- Close-out: the engineer completes the work and reports back with notes and evidence.
