Doing IT field work in the Netherlands: what to know
The Netherlands is a common first stop for foreign companies entering Europe. Field work there is usually smooth, but a few local details matter.
Language and time zone
Dutch is the official language. Many IT teams work comfortably in English, but reception staff, building signage and some access procedures will be in Dutch, so put the site contact’s preferred language on the ticket. The country runs on Central European Time, one hour ahead of the UK.
Dutch offices tend to keep a fairly standard daytime rhythm, but part-time working is common, so the person who can let an engineer in may not be on site every day. Ask for a backup contact on every job. For changes outside working hours, agree the window with the site well in advance, and confirm whether the building has its own security staff after hours.
Public holidays and site opening
The Dutch government lists the official holidays, including King’s Day on 27 April and Liberation Day on 5 May. It also notes that no one has a legal right to a day off on a public holiday: the collective labour agreement (CAO) or employment contract decides. In practice, that means one customer site may be open on Liberation Day while the office next door is closed. Confirm opening days per site rather than assuming a national calendar when you plan next-business-day cover.
Data protection
Personal data on Dutch sites is governed by the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) together with the Dutch GDPR Implementation Act (UAVG). The supervisor is the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens). For engineers this mostly comes down to how storage media, laptops and access badges are handled. Write the rules for swapped drives and returned devices into the job instructions.
Data centre access
Amsterdam is one of Europe’s major interconnection points and home to AMS-IX. Colocation sites around the city and Schiphol typically need pre-registration, ID checks and booked time slots. Some also ask for a method statement before work on live racks. Share those requirements at onboarding so the first dispatch is not delayed.
Parts and logistics
The Netherlands is inside the EU customs union, so once parts are cleared they can move to other member states without further customs formalities, as the European Commission explains. Parts sent from Great Britain still need export and import declarations, set out in GOV.UK guidance on exporting goods from the UK. Many companies hold EU spares in a Dutch warehouse for exactly this reason.
How it works
The model plugs into your existing ticketing and service desk:
- Scope: you share your sites in the Netherlands, the equipment and the service level you need.
- Coverage plan: we confirm which locations we cover and propose the right service tier for each.
- Onboarding: we join your vendor panel and agree the process for raising and closing jobs.
- Dispatch: you log a job; we send a vetted engineer to site.
- Close-out: the engineer completes the work and reports back with notes and evidence.

Frequently asked questions
Can you provide next business day engineers in the Netherlands?
Service levels are confirmed per site after you share your locations. Tell us the response you need for each Dutch site and we will confirm what we can commit to.
Do you support data centres in Amsterdam and Schiphol?
Yes. We support remote hands and smart hands work at colocation and enterprise data centres in and around Amsterdam, Schiphol and Almere, subject to each facility’s access rules.
Are Dutch public holidays days off for every site?
Not automatically. The collective labour agreement or contract decides, so opening days can vary between sites. We confirm site calendars when we plan cover.
Do I need a Dutch entity to use your engineers?
No. You contract with Throne Solutions directly, and we supply the engineers. You do not need a Dutch company, staff or payroll.
Can you handle a multi-site rollout across the Netherlands?
Yes. Share the site list, equipment and timeline and we will propose a rollout plan and confirm coverage for each location.
